Flock off

It's good to see the church speak out on social issues.

Not for Cardinal O'Brien the pick and mix apostasy of those Christians who think they can keep the faith, but ignore the unpalatable verses - like being a member of the BNP and claiming you're not a racist. No, the Cardinal prays to a vengeful god. He's a woman hating, homophobic bigot, and proud of it.

The equally charming Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor has suggested that Catholic MPs who vote the 'wrong' way could be denied communion. With Catholic groups planning to 'out' MPs who vote for abortion.

I certainly think religious affiliation should form part of the declaration of members interests. I like to know which parliamentarians are putting cant before their constituencies.

I didn't hear about this, but from a Catholic viewpoint, if you believe that the second of conception you're dealing with a person as real as you are now that you're...whatever age...54? then their instinctive feeling about abortion is the same as others might feel about murder. It's a life that's got no say in what becomes of it.

The sad thing is, choices people have to make are rarely black and white, but if you follow a religion then you either follow it or you don't. You can't really pick and choose which bits to believe in and follow and which not to.

I think you have an obligation though to ensure that, whatever your faith is, it remains YOUR faith and not something you try to impose on other people or judge them by.

Agreed. As a secularist not an atheist, I have no problem with whatever anyone chooses to believe in. But I do have a problem if they try and impose it on others.
