Disco Sucks!
Is it me, or is anyone else deeply embarrassed for Madonna. With one single she's gone from the Queen of Pop to Dj Sammy; phoning in a bored lyric over an Abba sample. When Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus created 'Gimme Gimme' 1979 it was two gifted, classically trained musicians, using emerging synthesiser technology, to produce a killer hook. In 2005 Madonna's producers pressed Cut and Paste.
But maybe I'm underestimating her, maybe she's just be capturing the zeitgeist of commercial dance music - The current great hope being a bald Scottish gentleman saying 'motherfucker' over the top of a Miami Soundmachine track. Today Mylo, tomorrow the next kid with a copy of Dance DJ, and an afternoon to spare.
In 1970, when Florian Schneider-Esleben and Ralf Hütter wanted to make music, they first had to build their instruments. Delia Derbyshire, working at the BBC, cut and spliced audio tape to make sounds. The early synthesizers took over an hour to create one note.
That level of effort creates built in quality control. When it takes nothing to achieve something, when you've learnt nothing to get there, you create nothing. And it does seem unique to Dance music that these pygmies are able to prosper.

I don't begrudge anyone fighting for their life. In the same circumstances I'm sure I would do the same. But in all the celebrations today, about another patient winning the right to be treated with Herceptin, I've not heard any mention of the other people who may die as a result of that descision.
Herceptin costs £21,800 per annum. It is unproven in its effectiveness in treating early stage breast cancer. Conversely, there are a large range of, far cheaper drugs, proven in their treatment of various cancer conditions.
What's better, treating 10 bowel cancer patients, with a high chance of saving their lives, or putting one patient on an experimental drug? The likelihood of survival should not be driven by who shouts the loudest, or who has the more photogenic illness.

It's for charidee
For the chaos Children in Need causes, it may be preferable for companies just to hand over a sizeable donation, so staff don't stop work for the day, and shake tins at each other.
However, it does have some benefits. Amongst the 'all in a good cause' hilarity was a tin shaker dressed in a rabbit costume. "dance for me bunny!" I commanded. And she's between my legs in a trice, shaking her fluffy tail in my face. I'm not one to judge, but it seemed like a pretty credible lap dance (lapin dance???).
BigCo's offices don't quite have the ambiance of a strip club, but it certainly enlivened my Friday morning. And since it was for all for the ickle children I happily stumped up a few quid, for her time - and with a twitch of her tail she was away.

I'm in a rather excellent internet cafe on Drummond St, down the side of Euston Station. £1 an hour, and all the samosas you can eat. Most satisfactory.
There's something about internet cafes, particularly independant ones, that makes me want to wax prosaic. Being able to turn up in a far flung corner (or not very far flung corner in this case) of the globe, and connect to anywhere else - cool
